It’s a test: If new users aren’t willing to embrace a little cringe, they’re probably not going to thrive on the site. They’re Tumblr users’ grassroots attempt at enforcing unwritten rules within their community. So, while the cringeposts themselves are jokes - part of a trend among users of riffing off any major current events so that it feels like the whole site is doing standup at the watercooler - they also serve a more serious purpose. If new users aren’t willing to embrace a little cringe, they’re probably not going to thrive on the site Eternal September may well be coming for Tumblr. According to Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Tumblr parent company Automattic, downloads of Tumblr’s app are up by 57% and 58% in the Android and iOS stores respectively. This concern that an influx of new users might impact Tumblr’s culture is a reasonable one. The tags of deluxetrashqueen’s post mention “shooting a gun to keep rent prices down” - a comparison to the idea that the “worse” the posts on Tumblr are, the less likely it is to be corporatized or attract a larger, mainstream audience. Take, for instance, the satirical “welcome” notice aimed at incoming Twitter users, stuffed with fandom-specific gifs and in jokes that were popular on the platform 10 or more years ago. Ex-Tumblr users especially are recommending it, after hearing the site is going through something of a renaissance.Ĭurrent Tumblr users’ response has been, in part, to amp up the cringeposting in an attempt to preserve the site’s culture. Still, one of the options that’s being thrown around is Tumblr. If the social media site folds, or just takes a turn that drives (even more) users away, there’s no clear replacement. “It helps me feel closer to you when you’re away, like a warm hug when I miss you.In the wake of Elon Musk buying Twitter and laying off more than half of its 7,500 employees, there’s been a lot of talk about where users might go next. His fingers played lightly with the corse cotton fabric as his smell, mixed with hers, wafted towards his nose. He was quick to roll towards her, gathering her into his arms, and slipping his legs between hers as he felt her head move to rest on his shoulder. He melted slightly at that, promising, “I’ll be right back,” as he quickly went into their adjoining bathroom to prepare for bed, returning to see that she had moved her glasses and book to the nightstand beside the bed, turning off the lamp she had on, and turning his side of the bed, allowing him to slip in beside her easily. He beamed as he looked back up to meet her eyes, “I didn’t mean to wake you.” Sometime during his detailed investigation of the one bare leg she had outside the covers, he heard her voice cut through his thoughts as her voice, rough with sleep, still resounded with joy: “you’re home!” He would know that shirt anywhere, it’s one of his favorite shirts to work out in - loose enough on him to allow him free movement when went to use his arms, so he could only imagine how loose it would be on her if she stood up. He sighed in relief when he swung open the door to their bedroom and saw her, his heart swelling as his eyes raked down from the crown of her tussled blonde head, past the reading glasses slipping off her nose, the forgotten book pressed against her chest, until he realized what she was wearing. He knew, no matter how hard she had tried, she was likely asleep by now - it’s why he didn’t text her when he approached, not wanting to wake her, knowing how badly she needs her rest, no matter how badly every cell in his body was screaming at him to. He checked his watch in the car, so he knew it was 3 in the morning. “Stupid weather,” he mumbled to himself, the weather delay that set him back two hours from this long awaited reunion with his wife (all 48 hours he has been apart from her side), something not even a President could control. He’s frustrated as he trudged slowly up the stairs, ripping his tie off in frustration as he went, balling it up in his hand. Which made me think about her wearing other items of his clothing - and this little fic was born. So it looks to me like that white button down she has on in that closer photo set is his given how loose the sleeves are on her (and how tight it looks like she’s had to tie it).
